A History.

     A genius, a psychic, a dancer, a brat, and a weapon.

     In River Tam's world, there are the Core planets (a self-proclaimed beacon of civilization in a fledgling galaxy far from Earth-that-was), the Rim planets (desolate and struggling with the effort of pioneers willing to do things most won't), the Alliance (a monolithic force of a government there to rule, from the smallest Rim moon to the most shining Core world), and the Independents (those that would rather live in a world without Alliance control or supervision).

      She grew up on the Core planet Osiris, the second genius child to affluent parents. River advanced quickly in her schooling, staying close to her older brother Simon all the while, and at the age of fourteen she was offered a place at an Alliance-run school that would challenge her in ways the collegiate honors courses she took in GenEd never could.

     And challenge her the school, known only as 'The Academy', did. There she was subject to experiments wherein her amygdala was removed, physical combat and agility training, and behavioral conditioning. It took three years before the coded messages she sent to Simon would end in her escape and eventual residence on the Firefly-class ship Serenity, given safe harbor among her crew for as long as they could manage such an arrangement.

     Now, thanks to the meddlesome doctors and the sudden flood of information psychically available to her after being made a 'reader', River's mind is a very confusing place. Imagine a 1000 piece puzzle dumped out of the box and mixed up with pieces from twenty other 1000 piece puzzles, with a few hundred more pieces not from any puzzles that won't ever make a whole picture. Not everything fits, not everything is hers, and not everything is going to make much sense. Girl tries, but it's a sea of pieces she isn't exactly equipped to navigate at the moment.
